Amidst rising fuel prices and an overall increase in ownership costs, patrons are gradually shifting towards EVs or CNG cars. For years, Maruti Suzuki dominated the CNG segment of cars. Later, Hyundai joined the CNG segment as well, followed by more recently, Tata Motors. However, electric vehicles are seen as the next big alternate fuel source in the automotive industry, but the question remains: how feasible are they against CNGs? First and foremost, the fitment and running costs of CNG are much cheaper than EVs. They also produce relatively lower emissions, unlike ICE vehicles. Although the CNG kit kills a lot of boot space, it will surely not kill the mileage. Below are the top CNG cars in India - Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG: The recently launched, Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG is one of the most fuel-efficient cars in India. It is powered by the 1.0-litre K10C Dual-Jet naturally aspirated engine. Its ARAI claimed mileage is rated at 35.60 km/kg. It is available only in the base model. The Celerio CNG is priced at ₹6.69 Lakhs (ex-showroom). Maruti Suzuki WagonR CNG: The Maruti Suzuki WagonR is already well-known for its spacious interiors, good height and excellent fuel economy. The WagonR CNG has a starting price of ₹6.42Lakhs (ex-showroom). Hyundai Santro CNG: This is Hyundai’s most affordable and best-selling vehicle since its debut. It is equipped with a factory-fitted CNG kit. The Santro CNG gets a 1.1-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and is mated only to a 5-speed manual gearbox. It offers an ARAI claimed mileage of 30.48km/kg. The price of the Santro CNG starts from ₹6.10 Lakhs (ex-showroom) and goes up to ₹6.38 Lakhs (ex-showroom). Tata Tiago i-CNG: The recently launched CNG-powered vehicle by Tata Motors is a feature-loaded car, unlike its competitors. It holds a 4-star Global-NCAP safety rating and claims to be one of the safest CNG cars in India. Depending upon the trim chosen, it offers features such as dual-tone interiors, a 7-inch touch infotainment unit, 8-speaker Harman surround system, rain-sensing wipers, and projector headlamps, to name a few. It is priced at ₹6.10 Lakhs (ex-showroom) and goes up to ₹7.65 Lakhs (ex-showroom). Maruti Suzuki Eeco CNG: The RWD minivan comes with a factory-fitted CNG. It is mostly used as a fleet vehicle. It draws power from a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The Eeco CNG is exclusively mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and its claimed ARAI mileage is 20.88km/kg. There is only one variant available, which costs ₹5.94 Lakhs (ex-showroom). So, these are a few CNG vehicles available on the market. The Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd launched the Skoda Kushaq last year under its ‘India 2.0’ project. Volkswagen Group had decided to invest 1 billion euros to strengthen its presence in the Indian subcontinent. The Skoda Kushaq is based on the new MQB-A0 IN platform which has 95% localization levels. Currently, the Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Slavia, Skoda Kushaq, and the upcoming Volkswagen Virtus are sharing the same platform. The MQB production line is based in the Chakan plant in Pune, Maharashtra. So, let’s proceed with the key highlights in this Skoda Kushaq review. EXTERIOR FAÇADE: The new butterfly grille surrounded by chrome gives the Skoda Kushaq exterior a really sharp look and the aerodynamics cuts on its bonnet give aggressive and sportier appeal. Few design elements are inspired by Skoda Kodiaq – for instance, the slim LED headlamps, L-shaped faux air dams on the front bumper, and get cladding to give a rugged look. Coming to the rear, it gets a boomerang-shaped taillight followed by a lower set of reflectors. The side profile is the same as Volkswagen Taigun. Comparing the Skoda Kushaq among its competitors, it holds the longest wheelbase of 2651mm in its segment but it’s smaller in length, width, and height than Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta, yet 4mm longer in length than Volkswagen Taigun. Ground clearance of Skoda Kushaq is 188mm. ON THE INSIDE: The Skoda Kushaq interior has a well-laid-out multi-layered dash that gives a premium look and the grainy textured plastics used on the dash and front door panels give a sophisticated appeal. Similar to Skoda Superb and Skoda Octavia, the Skoda Kushaq also gets a two-spoke steering wheel and an analogue-digital instrument cluster. It also gets a floating ten-inch touchscreen infotainment system and single-tone ambient lighting. It also gets cabin-boot access and offers a sunroof, which, however, is exclusive to the Style variant. It gets 385 litres of boot space and can be expanded to 1405 litres by folding the 60:40 split rear seats. Jumping to performance and transmission in this Skoda Kushaq review. UNDER THE HOOD:
Coming to the Skoda Kushaq specifications, it has two petrol engines on offer. There is a 1.0-litre TSI, three-cylinder engine which churns out 114bhp at 5000rpm and 178Nm torque at 1750rpm. The 1.5 litre TSI four-cylinder engine churns out 147bhp at 5000rpm and 250Nm torque at 1500rpm. Both the engines get a fuel capacity of 50 litres. Skoda Kushaq transmissions include a 6-speed manual transmission (MT), 6-speed torque converter (AT), and 7-speed DSG (dual-clutch automatic). The electric revolution is at our door and it has everything between two-wheelers, four-wheelers and even electric trucks! It has kept manufacturers on their toes to come up with cutting edge technology at an affordable price. Look at Ather, it was one of the first companies to introduce their electric-two-wheeler in India, and now faces a brutal challenge in the form of another popular and recently introduced rival, the Ola S1 Pro. Let’s take a look at how they compare with each other! Ather 450x vs Ola S1 Pro: Design The Ola S1 Pro has a simple, clutter-free design that looks quite futuristic. On the other hand, the Ather 450X has a sporty profile that looks a little busy in comparison. Nevertheless, the 450X is hard to miss on the road, especially in the mint-green colour. Moreover, Ola offers 10 body paint options with the S1 Pro where Ather has 3 on offer. As looks are always subjected to personal preference, it is on the buyer to opt for a design that catches their eye. Specifications Ather 450x Ola S1 Pro Seat Height Na 792mm Boot Space (litres) 26 36 Ground Clearance na 165 Kerb Weight (kg) 108 125 Ather 450x vs Ola S1 Pro: Features Both scooters have a lot of features on offer that make them a great buy. For instance, it has the bigger battery pack, more power, more torque and claims to offer more mileage on full charge. While the S1 Pro claims a range of 181kms, Ather claims fall a little short at 85-116km. On the other hand, it is quicker to charge the Ather whereas the Ola takes an hour more. Both scooters are sold with non-removable, fixed batteries. To keep range anxiety in check, both manufacturers are building a wide network of fast-charging stations. Ever since its debut in India, Jeep has seen significantly good sales for its SUVs. Keeping up with that success this year, Jeep India plans to launch three new SUVs in India, among which is the Jeep Compass Trailhawk. The standard Jeep Compass had a Trailhawk version in India pre-facelift. However, after the launch of the facelifted Compass, fans have been waiting with bated breath for the new Trailhawk to make its debut in the country. They can now rejoice, as the updated Jeep Compass Trailhawk is set to return to India this year. Read on for more information on the incoming Jeep Trailhawk in India. The Off-Road Specific Compass While the Jeep Compass's facelift launched early last year, the Trailhawk variant didn't make an appearance. Now information has surfaced that the Trailhawk variant of the Compass will be launching in March this year. Originally, the Jeep Compass Trailhawk was slated for a February 2022 launch, but recently got delayed by a month. The Compass Trailhawk is an off-road-focused variant of the Jeep Compass and gets certain differentiations in light of that, focused on its purpose. Cosmetic updates to the Jeep Compass Trailhawk include a different bumper setup front and rear for better approach and departure angles suited to its off-road purpose. It also gets sporty accents and a new alloy wheel design. While cosmetically and from the outside the Trailhawk is expected to be a rather sportier offering than the standard Compass, the interior will likely be quite similar to the standard Compass. Expect a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and voice recognition features. The cabin is likely to get a sportier steering wheel, ventilated seats, a 360-degree camera and more bells and whistles. Inside the Trailhawk
The Trailhawk is based on the Compass's top-end variant. But unlike the standard Compass, the Trailhawk gets only a diesel-powered variant. The Compass Trailhawk also gets a four-wheel-drive system with Jeep's SelecTerrain that enables the car to have features such as Rock mode and Hill Decent mode. Expect a 2.0-litre Multijet turbocharged diesel mill married to a nine-speed automatic gearbox only. The heart of the beast can put down 170PS and 350Nm of torque. Price of the Trailhawk The incoming Compass Trailhawk is likely to be priced around the ₹30 lakhs (Ex-Showroom) mark and while it doesn't directly compete with anything in the market, it goes against the likes of the C5 Aircross in India. With rising fuel prices, alternative fuels have been getting significantly more popular in India. CNG is one such system that is not only a cost-saving alternative but has had significant infrastructure in India for a few years now. It has become commonplace for automotive manufacturers to release petrol versions of their vehicles with CNG compatibility. While these cars tend to lose out on some boot space thanks to their large CNG tanks, they do offer phenomenal mileage and cost-saving ownership. With factory-fitted CNG cars getting more popular, manufacturers are now offering significant features with their CNG cars as well. In the market for a new CNG car? Check out these CNG cars in India that may be worth the buy. Maruti Suzuki Celerio Maruti Suzuki recently launched the CNG version of the Celerio. The from-the-factory CNG kit does its duties in the middle VXI variant of the petrol car and is the only variant on offer at the moment. Powering the Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG is the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, of course, made compatible for CNG. This new Celerio puts down 56bhp of power and 82.1Nm of torque, which is 9.8bhp and 6.9Nm lower than the petrol variant, as expected. Regarding transmission duties, the Celerio CNG comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission and misses out on its petrol counterpart's AMT. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG is priced at ₹6.58 lakhs (Ex-Showroom). Tata Tiago/Tata Tigor Tata Motor's CNG variant of the Tata Tiago and Tigor has been launched in India. The EV automotive scene in India has started been gaining significant traction in recent years. While the two-wheeler EV market in India has really picked up quite a bit, it hasn't become as commonplace in the four-wheeler market. However, with recent petrol prices hitting the roof, the popularity of EV engines has been increasing as well. Taking this change in the market to heart, Tata Motors, already the leading EV four-wheeler producer in the market, has set in motion its plan to tackle the fledgling EV scene in India head-on. To that end, Tata Motors made official its news of investing in an all-new EV-centric sub-brand in October last year. It announced that private equity firm TPG Group will be investing an amount of ₹7,500 crores in Tata's new EV-centric four-wheelers subsidiary. The new EV leg of the company has been christened Tata Passenger Electric Mobility. Tata aims to use it to design, develop and manufacture not just new EVs but all sorts of services and EV elements, such as larger battery packs that will power the new EV vehicles. The predominant aim of the new electric division of Tata Motors will aim to bring long-range EV four-wheelers to the market. As of right now, Tata has been relying on converting its current internal combustion engine platforms in the market into EVs. In the future, TPEM will be looking at all-new platforms that will enable the company to produce modular multi-energy options. As per Tata Motor's goals and projections, the company aims to have at least ten EV vehicles in its roster which will be responsible for 25 per cent of the company's sales, by FY 2026. To that end, the company already has Tata Nexon EV and Tata Tigor EV available in the Indian market, based on their ICE platforms. Meanwhile, the company has revealed the Altroz EV and claims that a Tata Punch EV is in the works as well. The EV scene in India, at least concerning Tata Motors, who have been in the lead of this fledgling alt-fuel market so far, seems to be heading in an upward direction. For more information on Tata's Nexon EV and Tata Tigor EV, such as their On-Road Price in India, or information regarding upcoming EV cars in India, check out autoX's price section and upcoming cars section.
