With rising fuel prices, alternative fuels have been getting significantly more popular in India. CNG is one such system that is not only a cost-saving alternative but has had significant infrastructure in India for a few years now. It has become commonplace for automotive manufacturers to release petrol versions of their vehicles with CNG compatibility. While these cars tend to lose out on some boot space thanks to their large CNG tanks, they do offer phenomenal mileage and cost-saving ownership. With factory-fitted CNG cars getting more popular, manufacturers are now offering significant features with their CNG cars as well. In the market for a new CNG car? Check out these CNG cars in India that may be worth the buy. Maruti Suzuki Celerio Maruti Suzuki recently launched the CNG version of the Celerio. The Celerio CNG claims the highest mileage available among CNG cars in India currently. Maruti Suzuki claims a fuel efficiency of 35.6km/kg for the new Celerio. The from-the-factory CNG kit does its duties in the middle VXI variant of the petrol car and is the only variant on offer at the moment. Powering the Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG is the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, of course, made compatible for CNG. This new Celerio puts down 56bhp of power and 82.1Nm of torque, which is 9.8bhp and 6.9Nm lower than the petrol variant, as expected. Regarding transmission duties, the Celerio CNG comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission and misses out on its petrol counterpart's AMT. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG is priced at ₹6.58 lakhs (Ex-Showroom). Tata Tiago/Tata Tigor Tata Motor's CNG variant of the Tata Tiago and Tigor has been launched in India. With the launch of Tata's new CNG cars, Tata Motors officially enter the running in alternative fuels behind Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki. The same petrol 1.2-litre Revotron engine has been modified to run with a CNG kit for both cars. The CNG variants put down 73PS of power. The Tata Tiago iCNG hatchback is priced starting at ₹6.09 lakhs (Ex-Showroom) for the base XE variant and gets three other variants above this. Whereas the Tata Tigor iCNG sedan is priced starting at ₹7.69 lakhs (Ex-Showroom) for the base XZ variant and gets only one other XZ+ variant above it. Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS CNG
Hyundai recently launched the CNG variant of its hatchback, the Grand i10 NIOS. The CNG powertrain gets two mid variants: Magna and Sportz. Although like most CNG offerings, the i10's CNG variants come at a premium over their petrol counterparts. Powering the Grand i10 NIOS is a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine made CNG compatible. The power and torque output figures drop down to 69bhp and 95Nm for the CNG model. Price for the Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS CNG begins at ₹6.63 lakhs for the Magna variant. Verdict Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai have been in the top running with their CNG offerings in the market. But the well-executed Tata cars ensure that Tata Motors proves itself a worthy contender.
